Peace and  Nature

Peace on earth. Why do we consider peace, man’s exclusive privilege? Do other species deserve the right to peace? As man forges farther into deep forests, we are destroying the habitat of many wild creatures.  We are at war with nature.

According to a survey taken of the scientific community conducted by the American Museum of Natural History and Louis Harris and Associates, Inc., the majority of Scientists agree that we are in the middle of a mass extinction, which poses a threat to human existence. This mass extinction is the fastest in Earth’s history and, unlike previous events, is mostly the result of human activity and not a natural occurrence.

Some scientists, such as E.O. Wilson of Harvard University predict that destruction of the biosphere could cause extinction of half of all species in the next 100 years! Systems theorist, Gregory Bateson states: “The major problems of the world are the result of the way nature works and the way man thinks.” When man is not at peace with nature, man can not be at peace with mankind.

How can we make a difference as individuals? Re-creation of native environments not only helps animals regain habitat but also offsets carbon dioxide created by man. Consider, working with a local park to plant trees and support organizations that work to protect natural habitats and national parks. Learn as much as you can and become aware of what is happening to our natural world.
