What is
the link between energy and peace? Before we can recognize the link we
must first recognize the different forms of energy. Productive energy
first came from human physical labor. Mechanical energy soon supplemented
physical labor. Mechanical energy, such as water wheels, was soon followed
by petroleum. Everything from coal to oil has been used to power machines
and create electricity.
Our claim
to energy includes the kidnapping of slaves, to wars over water rights and
oil. It shows the degree to which we will disregard the rights of people
to a peaceful existence.
As inexpensive renewable sources of energy are developed, 2nd and 3rd
world markets stand to receive the benefit of this new sustainable energy
technology. Affordable energy translates to better productivity and a
better quality of life. Farming, and the ability to deliver clean water,
will be greatly impacted in developing nations.
US vehicles now produce 7 times as much energy as the entire US electric
grid. Amory Lovins of the Rocky Mountain Institute has developed an ultra
efficient hybrid that operates at over 100 miles per gallon. This vehicle
will actually have an energy surplus at the end of
a day’s use. This surplus energy can be returned to the US electric grid,
creating an energy credit for its owner. Solar, Hydro, and Wind turbines
are poised to transform US markets. In spite of the up side to renewable
energy, energy companies have been slow to invest in cheap renewable
energy sources because profits are more illusive from these technologies.
The technology exists to completely remove the US dependence on foreign
oil and thereby removing much of the conflict in our world energy markets.
You can participate in this positive movement towards sustainable
renewable energy by purchasing products and services that incorporate the
latest energy technology. We can send a message to corporations that we
are not willing to sacrifice Peace for their profits.
